Bethesda Terrace and Fountain

Bethesda Terrace joins a richly decorated arcade with an open view of Central Park’s Lake. It is a rewarding architectural pause on a walk between the Mall and the waterside landscape.

Bethesda Terrace and Fountain

Why go

The two levels make the approach part of the experience: stairs connect the upper terrace with the fountain and Lake below. The tiled arcade invites close attention before the space opens toward the water. This contrast between ornament and landscape gives the stop more substance than a fountain photograph alone.

What to look for

  • The arcade ceiling carries restored Minton encaustic tiles.
  • Emma Stebbins’s Angel of the Waters crowns the fountain.
  • Carved sandstone, granite stairs and brick paving give the terrace varied surfaces.

The full story

In Olmsted and Vaux’s 1858 Greensward Plan, this was the Water Terrace, designed to bring the Mall to an architectural conclusion overlooking the Lake. Calvert Vaux shaped the built features, with Jacob Wrey Mould responsible for sculptural decoration. The angel’s unveiling in 1873 helped establish the Bethesda name. Emma Stebbins was the first woman to receive a public commission for a major artwork in New York City. The surfaces visible today also carry a restoration history. The fountain became a centerpiece of the Central Park Conservancy’s early rebuilding work in 1980–81. The terrace stonework was taken apart, cleaned, repaired and reset. The arcade tiles were removed in 1987 and reinstalled in 2007 after restoration and completion with additional tiles. Their survival makes the sheltered passage an important stop in its own right.

Useful to know

  • Pause beneath the arcade before moving out toward the fountain.
  • Continue toward the Mall or Ramble according to the next park stop.
