New York Botanical Garden

The New York Botanical Garden combines cultivated collections, a glass conservatory and old-growth forest in the Bronx. Its large grounds suit a dedicated plant-and-landscape outing with a chosen route.

New York Botanical Garden

Why go

The contrast between designed gardens and surviving woodland gives the visit unusual range. The Haupt Conservatory presents cultivated plant environments, while the Bronx River passes through an older forest landscape. The rose garden and historic mill add other specific points of attention, making a focused sequence more rewarding than trying to traverse every collection.

What to look for

  • The Enid A. Haupt Conservatory has a wrought-iron-framed, glasshouse design.
  • Old-growth forest survives beside the Bronx River’s canyon and rapids.
  • The Stone Mill recalls the Lorillard estate’s industrial history.

The full story

The garden was established in 1891 on land associated with the Lorillard estate and nearby St. John’s College, now Fordham University. Nathaniel Lord Britton and Elizabeth Gertrude Britton helped lead its creation after inspiration from the Royal Botanic Gardens in London. Its purpose joined living plant collections with botanical research and education. The grounds preserve contrasting histories. The old-growth forest was never logged, retaining trees and river scenery that differ sharply from the designed gardens. The Stone Mill, built in 1840 and formerly known as the Lorillard Snuff Mill, records an industrial use of the same landscape. The Haupt Conservatory represents another nineteenth-century idea: the glass-and-iron structure that could house plants from different environments. Seen together, forest, mill and conservatory show that the garden is not only a display of flowers. It is a place where natural continuity, estate history and scientific cultivation meet.
