The pleasure here is both above and below: cross the deck for the valley outlook, then inspect the lattice of ironwork from the surrounding paths. Reusing the railway structure as a walking and cycling route makes its scale easy to appreciate. This is an exposed outdoor stop, best combined with a longer Erewash Valley outing in settled weather.
What to look for
The viaduct’s structure forms a lattice of wrought iron.
A public walking and cycling route crosses the deck.
The deck gives views across the Erewash Valley.
Useful to know
Check approach routes and restrictions before setting out.
Allow time to view the ironwork from below as well as crossing the deck.
