Theatre Royal

For an evening of drama, ballet, opera or a musical, look at the Theatre Royal’s programme. Its Victorian theatre and columned front offer a different setting from the adjoining Royal Concert Hall.

Why go

Look up Market Street towards the neoclassical façade, then let the production determine whether to spend an evening inside. Charles J Phipps designed the theatre for lace factory owners John and William Lambert in 1865. Frank Matcham’s 1897 transformation of the auditorium added another chapter to the building you experience during a performance.

What to look for

  • Corinthian columns frame the theatre’s neoclassical façade.
  • The Victorian auditorium reflects Frank Matcham’s 1897 remodelling.

Useful to know

  • Confirm that your selected show is in the Theatre Royal rather than the Royal Concert Hall.
  • Use the dated performance listing to plan the evening; box-office hours do not describe sightseeing access.
