Why go
Shopping here can be part of an old-town walk rather than a separate excursion. From Königstraße and St. Lorenz, compare the busier Breite Gasse and Karolinenstraße with Kaiserstraße nearer the Pegnitz. Trödelmarkt and the Sebalder side offer smaller-scale browsing. Lebkuchen is the distinctive edible gift; packaged Nürnberger Bratwürste are another local option.
The full story
Nuremberg’s main shopping streets lie in the Lorenzer old town, south of the Pegnitz. Königstraße connects the area around Nürnberg Hauptbahnhof and St. Lorenz with the heart of the city. Breite Gasse and Karolinenstraße form the busy shopping core, while Kaiserstraße runs closer to the river. The point of walking these streets is as much orientation as shopping: from one part of the old town, you can move easily toward churches, bridges and Hauptmarkt. Across the Pegnitz, the Sebalder old town has a different scale. Trödelmarkt is associated with smaller shops, making it a useful change of pace after the larger shopping streets. Individual stores change, so the street and district are more reliable guides than an old list of names. Lebkuchen is a Nuremberg specialty worth considering as a gift. Elisenlebkuchen is a named variety to look for when comparing labels. Nürnberger Bratwürste also appear in packaged forms, though they answer a different question from eating freshly prepared sausages in the city.
