Japanese language and its history

Learn a few Japanese phrases, then notice how standard Tokyo speech and regional languages reflect a history that reaches beyond the main islands.

Japanese language and its history

Why go

Language explains small travel encounters: a television-style standard differs from local speech, while the Ryūkyū Islands belong to the wider Japonic family. This context makes signs, greetings, and older written forms more legible without turning a trip into a linguistics course.

The full story

Japanese functions as the country’s de facto national language, but its standard form is a historical choice. Hyōjungo, also called kyōtsūgo, developed after the 1868 Meiji Restoration from speech associated with Tokyo’s Yamanote area, and became the form taught in schools and used in television and official communication. Older literary Japanese, bungo, was distinct from everyday kōgo; it remains relevant when encountering older texts and laws. Japanese also belongs to the Japonic family with the languages of the Ryūkyū Islands. That relationship is the firmly supported one among many proposed linguistic connections. The language’s overseas history has a harder edge: Japanese was taught under imperial rule in Taiwan, Korea, parts of China, the Philippines, and Pacific islands. For travelers, the useful decision is simple: rely on standard Japanese for basics, but treat local speech and place names as part of a region’s own history.
