Japanese literature through its classics

Read a short classic before visiting historic Japan: Kojiki, Man’yōshū, The Tale of Genji, and The Pillow Book anchor mythology, poetry, court life, and writing.

Japanese literature through its classics

Why go

Literature gives historical sites a human scale. Early chronicles and poetry sit beside Heian court writing by Murasaki Shikibu and Sei Shōnagon, showing how Chinese characters were adapted into kana and how Japanese prose found its own voice across generations.

The full story

Japanese literature began under strong contact with China and Buddhist transmission, yet developed a distinct voice as writers used Japanese subjects and forms. Before kanji arrived from China, Japanese had no writing system. Characters were first fitted to Japanese syntax, then adapted into man’yōgana, an early form of kana. Nara-period landmarks include the Kojiki of 712, a record that combines history, mythology, and folk songs; the more detailed Chinese-language Nihon Shoki of 720; and the Man’yōshū poetry anthology of 759. The classical Heian period brought court writing that remains central for visitors interested in Kyoto’s cultural history. Murasaki Shikibu’s early-eleventh-century The Tale of Genji is a landmark of fiction, while her contemporary Sei Shōnagon wrote The Pillow Book about courtly life. Bring one short passage or a good translation to a museum or former capital: it offers a better question than “what happened here?”—whose voice, setting, or poetic convention does this place make visible?
