Samurai Rule and the Shogunates

Kamakura, Kyoto and Tokyo became centers of military power in different periods. Their temples, castles and museums make more sense when you distinguish successive shogunates from one timeless samurai era.

Samurai Rule and the Shogunates

Why go

Military government shaped more than warfare. Samurai patronage helped spread Zen culture, while rival lords built fortified centers and the Tokugawa rulers governed from Edo. Use this history to compare a castle’s defenses with a temple’s artistic setting, and to understand why political centers moved between cities.

The full story

Minamoto no Yoritomo established a military government in Kamakura after the conflicts of the late twelfth century. The emperor remained an important figure, but successive warrior governments exercised political power. Zen Buddhism gained influential samurai patrons, connecting military history with temple culture. The Ashikaga shogunate later governed from Kyoto. Its patronage contributed to cultural developments associated with the city’s temple architecture and arts, but its weakening authority also allowed regional lords to compete. The Ōnin War opened a long period of conflict, followed by the campaigns of Oda Nobunaga, Toyotomi Hideyoshi and Tokugawa Ieyasu. After victory at Sekigahara, Ieyasu became shogun in 1603 and established the Tokugawa government in Edo, today’s Tokyo. The Edo period combined strict political control with expanding urban culture. Overseas contacts were restricted, but they did not disappear: Dutch trade at Dejima in Nagasaki supported the study of Western knowledge. Different sites preserve different parts of this story, so compare their dates and patrons rather than assuming every old building belongs to the same period.
