Dōtonbori

Osaka’s canal-side entertainment district compresses illuminated billboards, busy bridges and food streets into a walkable neighborhood where the evening spectacle is as memorable as a meal.

Dōtonbori

Why go

Walk along the water before turning into the streets behind it: the canal gives you room to appreciate the signs, while the surrounding lanes reveal Osaka’s appetite for casual dining. The Glico runner at Ebisu Bridge is a useful landmark, but the district rewards wandering beyond that crowded photograph point.

What to look for

  • Glico runner viewed from Ebisu Bridge
  • Canal promenade and extravagant restaurant signs
  • Takoyaki and okonomiyaki restaurants

Useful to know

  • Visit after sunset for the illuminated canal signs.
  • Use Namba as the main rail and subway gateway.
  • Read the menu and prices before joining a restaurant queue.
