San Giovanni degli Eremiti
Near the Royal Palace, five red domes and a small cloister make this church one of Palermo's clearest visual introductions to Arab-Norman architecture.
The domes give an immediate landmark, but the cloister and surviving church fabric make the visit more than a photograph from outside. Pair it with the nearby palace to compare a compact religious building with the Norman court's far grander setting.
What to look for
The cluster of red domes above the church
A cloister beside the medieval church
The restrained Arab-Norman structure beneath the later restorations
Useful to know
See the domes from outside first, then enter for the cloister and the building's smaller-scale details.
Combine it with the Royal Palace nearby, leaving separate time for each interior.
