San Giovanni dei Lebbrosi
This small Norman church sits away from Palermo's busiest monument cluster. Its plain exterior, dome and surviving medieval character reward visitors who want a quieter architectural comparison.
The church offers a spare counterpart to Palermo's more lavish Arab-Norman sites. Its name recalls the medieval leper hospital once attached to it, while the three-aisled interior and central dome bring the Norman building itself into focus. Go for that historical contrast rather than expecting a large museum visit.
What to look for
An austere Norman exterior with a central dome
Three aisles beneath the compact church roof
A 15th-century painted crucifix inside
Useful to know
Treat this as a deliberate detour from the central monuments, not an incidental stop on the main historic-center circuit.
