From the Paris World / Stories

Paris Hills and Views

Paris is mostly gentle underfoot, but its hills shape neighbourhood character, skyline views and a few walks that demand a climb.

Paris Hills and Views

Why go

Topography matters most when choosing between the city’s raised districts. Montmartre offers the best-known ascent, but Belleville reaches the highest point within Paris. Montagne Sainte-Geneviève, Chaillot and Butte-aux-Cailles are lower rises that still change the feel of a walk and sometimes open the city beyond the street line.

The full story

The Seine runs through a city that is generally low and fairly flat, which is why long walks between central sights often feel manageable. The exceptions give Paris some of its strongest local identities. Montmartre rises to the north with Sacré-Cœur on its slope, while Belleville, farther east, reaches the highest elevation within the city around rue du Télégraphe. Other modest rises include Ménilmontant, Buttes-Chaumont, Chaillot, Montagne Sainte-Geneviève and Butte-aux-Cailles. These are not mountain walks, but they affect routes, views and the way neighbourhoods unfold. The landscape also reflects older movements of the Seine. Paris lies in the Paris Basin, where marine sedimentary rock, including limestone used in many buildings, formed beneath the city. River channels cut the wider valley over time. When planning on foot, expect easy terrain along the river and a more deliberate climb when a route heads toward one of these named hills.
