Why go
The numbered arrondissements make Paris easier to read. Most central postal codes follow a simple 75001 to 75020 pattern, so an address can immediately show which district it belongs to. That is useful when comparing accommodation, meeting points and the last leg of a journey.
The full story
Paris’s twenty numbered arrondissements give the city an unusually legible address system. In most cases, a postal code beginning 750 is followed by the arrondissement number: 75001 refers to the 1st arrondissement, 75011 to the 11th, and so on through 75020. The 16th arrondissement is the exception, using both 75016 and 75116. This small pattern has a practical payoff. It helps a visitor see whether an address is near the Louvre, in the Latin Quarter, toward Montmartre, or on the city’s western side before opening a map. It also makes written details more informative than a street name alone, since the same broad street can cross several areas. Communications services change much faster than the city’s geography. Treat public Wi-Fi networks, café access, phone products and connection terms as current information to verify when planning, rather than durable features of a neighbourhood.
Useful to know
- Use the final digits of a Paris postal code to identify the arrondissement, while noting that the 16th also uses 75116.
- Save complete addresses, including the arrondissement or postal code, before leaving Wi-Fi.
- Confirm current mobile, Wi-Fi and public-access options with the relevant provider or venue.
