Tierra del Fuego's Changing Landscape
The Argentine side of Tierra del Fuego shifts from northern open country to lakes, forest and mountains near the Beagle Channel. Wind, cool weather and distance shape every route.

Keep exploring Argentine Patagonia with our travel partners.
The island's north and south feel markedly different. Río Grande faces the Atlantic across open terrain; farther south, Lake Fagnano and the mountain belt lead toward Ushuaia and the Beagle Channel. Glaciation shaped the valleys and lakes, so the drive itself makes the landscape's structure visible.
What to look for
Lake Fagnano lies in a long depression across the island.
Forested southern slopes contrast with the open northern terrain.
The Beagle Channel runs along the southern side of the main island.
Useful to know
Allow time for weather changes while travelling between Río Grande, Lake Fagnano and Ushuaia.
