Why go
The building uses carved wood as both architecture and storytelling. Its four entrance towers draw on Buddhist and Hindu imagery associated with Cambodia, China, India and Thailand, so a slow circuit reveals changing figures and traditions rather than one repeated decorative scheme.
What to look for
- Study how carved figures cover the wooden structure from the entrance towers to the interior.
- Compare the Buddhist and Hindu motifs across the four entrance towers.
- Watch the on-site carving craft to see how the elaborate wooden surfaces are made.
The full story
The Sanctuary of Truth began as Lek Viriyaphant's project in 1981, using an all-wood structure to explore ideas drawn from Buddhist and Hindu traditions. Its Khmer-inspired form and four entrance towers are useful clues to how the building should be read: the carved figures are part of its architecture, not a collection displayed inside a plain hall. Look from the roofline down to the columns and walls, then compare the figures around different entrances. The traditions represented span Cambodia, China, India and Thailand, giving the building several visual languages at once. The continuing work of carving also matters to a visit. Seeing the craft on site connects the finished figures to the hands and tools needed to make and maintain a structure covered in detailed woodwork.
