The full story
Country music has a strong rural southeastern presence, with Tamworth’s festival a major gathering for that scene. Slim Dusty is a durable name to recognise in this tradition. If you are drawn to country music, Tamworth provides a more specific cultural destination than a general expectation of hearing it everywhere. Festival dates and line-ups need a current check. Classical music has another set of anchors in the symphony orchestras of Sydney, Melbourne and Tasmania and the Australian Chamber Orchestra. Composers including Peter Sculthorpe and John Antill drew on influences from Indigenous cultures and neighbouring Asia. That influence is not the same as an Indigenous artist's own work. Yothu Yindi and Archie Roach are Indigenous musicians bringing their perspectives into contemporary popular music. Listening across these scenes makes the range of Australian music clearer than a list of famous pop exports would.
