Great Ocean Road

The Great Ocean Road follows Victoria's southern coast from Torquay towards Allansford. Surf Coast towns, forest country and the limestone cliffs near Port Campbell make it a journey with changing landscapes.

Why go

This coastal road connects quite different places: the surf around Torquay, towns including Lorne and Apollo Bay, and the Shipwreck Coast near Port Campbell. The Twelve Apostles, Loch Ard Gorge and London Arch are separate stops, so decide which stretch matters most before setting out. Its memorial history adds another layer to the drive.

What to look for

  • The Surf Coast around Torquay and Lorne
  • The Twelve Apostles and other limestone formations near Port Campbell
  • Forest and coastal scenery around Apollo Bay and Cape Otway

The full story

The Great Ocean Road was built by returned soldiers after the First World War and dedicated to Australians who died in that war. That memorial purpose is easy to miss when the trip is reduced to photographs of the Twelve Apostles. The road itself is part of the story: it links a succession of coastal settlements and changes character as it moves west from the Surf Coast towards the Shipwreck Coast. Around Torquay and Lorne, the coastline and surf towns set the pace. Farther west, Apollo Bay and Cape Otway lead towards forested country. Near Port Campbell, erosion has shaped the limestone coast into stacks, gorges and arches, including the Twelve Apostles, Loch Ard Gorge and London Arch. Those formations are individual sites along a long road, not one clustered viewpoint. Planning a shorter section gives time to notice how the terrain changes and why the road became a memorial journey as well as a scenic one.

Useful to know

  • Plan a chosen stretch and its stops; the whole road is too long to treat as one attraction.
  • Allow for coastal weather and check current road conditions before driving.
