Sydney Harbour Bridge

The steel arch links central Sydney with the North Shore and frames one of the city's best-known harbour scenes. It rewards a close look at its working structure as well as its skyline shape.

Why go

Read the bridge as transport, engineering and city symbol at once. Rail, road, pedestrian and bicycle traffic share the crossing, while the arch and pylons give it the ‘Coathanger’ profile. Its relationship with the Opera House helps explain why the two landmarks are so often seen together across the harbour.

The full story

Sydney Harbour Bridge opened in 1932, connecting the city centre with the North Shore. It was built under the direction of J. J. C. Bradfield by the firm Dorman Long, and its broad steel arch made a lasting mark on the skyline. The nickname ‘Coathanger’ comes directly from that shape. This is also a working crossing. Trains, road vehicles, cyclists and pedestrians use different parts of the structure, so the bridge is more than a view to photograph. The southern end meets the city near The Rocks, while the northern end reaches Milsons Point. Its position makes it a natural companion to the Opera House when reading the harbour's layout. The pylons and steelwork recall the scale of the construction effort, and the former tram lanes illustrate how the crossing has changed with Sydney's transport needs. Treat the landmark as a link between shores as well as an object in the skyline; that is the key to its place in the city.
