Why go

Colonial sites make more sense when seen as parts of an expanding system rather than isolated old buildings. Britain's vast territorial claim, the experimental Norfolk Island settlement and the 1813 Blue Mountains crossing show how administrators sought resources, transport routes and new land beyond Sydney.

The full story

Britain's claim covered an enormous eastern portion of the continent, despite the presence of Aboriginal peoples across it. The colony founded in New South Wales in 1788 became the base for further British settlement. One early offshoot was Norfolk Island, where settlers hoped pine and flax might support naval supplies. Its lack of a safe harbour undermined that plan; the settlement was evacuated to Tasmania in 1807 and later re-established as a penal station. The Blue Mountains west of Sydney formed another obstacle. In 1813 Gregory Blaxland, William Lawson and William Wentworth crossed the forested gullies and cliffs, opening a route for colonial expansion into the interior. That expansion also carried British occupation further into Indigenous lands. Colonial society was more than governors and convicts. Women helped build schools, hospitals and welfare networks. Caroline Chisholm worked for migrant women, while religious orders established educational and charitable institutions. These histories sit alongside the story of land claims and settlement, and help explain what colonial places were built to do.
