Why go
This is the island’s clearest counterpoint to beaches and development. The protected forest holds the headwaters for both major waterfalls and provides habitat context for gibbon reintroduction. Come to understand Phuket as a tropical ecosystem, not simply to collect a single viewpoint.
What to look for
- Dense rainforest across a north-south mountain range
- Stream valleys feeding Ton Sai and Bang Pae waterfalls
- Habitat linked to long-running gibbon reintroduction work
Useful to know
- Choose either the Ton Sai or Bang Pae side as a defined entry point; the protected area is not one compact visitor site.
- Ask DNP staff about current trail conditions before entering longer forest routes.
- Wear closed shoes and carry water; heat, rain and slick surfaces can materially change the outing.
