Monkey Hill (Khao To Sae)

A steep urban hill combines macaque watching, local exercise culture and partial city views; animal caution matters more here than at Phuket's formal lookouts.

Monkey Hill (Khao To Sae)

Why go

Go for an active, slightly untamed counterpoint to landscaped viewpoints. The climb passes forest, shrines and troops of macaques before opening occasional views over Phuket Town. The animals are wild, however, so the experience rewards observation at a distance rather than feeding or close interaction.

What to look for

  • Free-ranging macaques along the forested road
  • Local walkers using the steep route for exercise
  • Openings toward Phuket Town below

Useful to know

  • Do not feed, touch or corner macaques; secure food, glasses and loose belongings.
  • Walk in cooler morning or late-afternoon conditions and carry water.
  • Give animals space and turn back if a troop blocks the road.
