The ancient forms of Pompeii's name and the uncertainty surrounding their linguistic origin change how the excavated city makes sense. Ancient writers and inscriptions preserve different forms of Pompeii's name, but its precise origin remains debated. Proposed explanations have linked it to Oscan language, a word for five, or an early grouping of communities.

Ancient writers and inscriptions preserve different forms of Pompeii's name, but its precise origin remains debated. Proposed explanations have linked it to Oscan language, a word for five, or an early grouping of communities. None of those theories should be treated as certain. The useful point for a visitor is that the name belongs to a settlement older than Roman colonization. Pompeii developed through contact among Oscan, Greek, Etruscan, Samnite, and Roman worlds. That layered history survives in building phases, street alignments, construction techniques, and religious sites. When labels identify older masonry beneath later façades, they are showing the same long history that the uncertain name hints at: Roman Pompeii was the final form of a city that had already been rebuilt and reinterpreted many times.
