From the Puerto Rico World / Stories

San Juan National Historic Site

This National Park Service historic site links El Morro, San Cristóbal and sections of Old San Juan's defensive walls. Visit it as a set of fortifications around the old city, not one building.

San Juan National Historic Site

Why go

El Morro faces the bay entrance; San Cristóbal addresses the landward approach; the walls connect the fortified city between them. Seeing more than one part reveals how the Spanish defended a harbor settlement from different directions. The site and La Fortaleza share a UNESCO World Heritage designation.

What to look for

  • El Morro stands at the western end of the islet above the entrance to San Juan Bay.
  • San Cristóbal is another major fortification on Old San Juan's eastern side.
  • Surviving city walls make the relationship between the forts and streets visible.

Useful to know

  • Choose one fort for a shorter visit or allow more time to compare El Morro with San Cristóbal.
  • Check National Park Service access and hours before planning to enter individual fort structures.
