San Juan's Coast and Lagoons
San Juan sits on Puerto Rico's northeastern coast, between the Atlantic and a network of bay and lagoons. Water helps explain the city's shape and why nearby districts do not feel alike.

Old San Juan occupies a narrow islet at the mouth of San Juan Bay, giving its forts views toward the harbor and open Atlantic. Condado and San José lagoons mark a different waterfront setting farther east. Those water bodies are useful landmarks when moving between the historic core and the wider city.
Useful to know
Use San Juan Bay and the Atlantic shoreline to orient your walk in Old San Juan.
Check the exact district before traveling across the city; a waterfront address may be on the bay, Atlantic coast or a lagoon.
