Plaza Colón
Plaza Colón marks the eastern approach to Old San Juan and centers on a Columbus monument. The square occupies the area where an eastern city gate once controlled the landward entrance.
Why go
Start a walking route here to understand the old city’s former landward gateway before following its streets west. The plaza makes sense as the beginning of an Old San Juan walk because the former defensive edge is easier to imagine here. The monument, surrounding buildings and busy approach together show how an old threshold became a civic gathering place.
What to look for
Gateway square by the old city's eastern edge.
Useful to know
Expect traffic around the plaza edges; cross at marked points.
