Why go
Choose a neighborhood for the days you actually want: Centro for the old waterfront and civic landmarks, Emiliano Zapata for easy access to Los Muertos and Olas Altas, or the northern hotel zone for a different beach base. The river is the useful dividing line.
The full story
Centro is the oldest part of town, centered near Our Lady of Guadalupe church and extending north of the Río Cuale. Cross the river and you enter Emiliano Zapata, also called the Romantic Zone in visitor material, with Olas Altas and Los Muertos beach close by. Conchas Chinas rises on the hillside beyond the southern beach area. Just north of Centro is 5 de Diciembre, one of the early neighborhoods that expanded beyond the core. Farther north, Versalles and Pitillal show that Puerto Vallarta is also a city of long-established residential districts, not only a line of hotels. The hotel zone occupies a separate coastal stretch. Beyond the continuous urban area, places such as Mismaloya and Boca de Tomatlán belong to the wider municipality but make different coastal outings. This north-to-south sequence helps avoid treating every address marked “Puerto Vallarta” as equally close to the Malecón or Los Muertos.
Useful to know
- Use the Río Cuale to separate a Centro walk from time around Olas Altas and Los Muertos.
- Treat Mismaloya and Boca de Tomatlán as separate coast outings from the central neighborhoods.
