Why go
The mix of Australian wildlife, crocodile presentations and broader animal habitats sets it apart from a small sanctuary. A visit can also connect the displays with the Wildlife Hospital's conservation work. Show times and optional encounters determine how you move through the large grounds.
What to look for
- Watch a Crocoseum Wildlife Warriors presentation if running.
- Compare the Australian wildlife areas with Africa and South-East Asia habitats.
- See the Wildlife Hospital Sneak Peek if available.
The full story
Bob and Lyn Irwin opened a small reptile and fauna park at Beerwah in 1970. Their son Steve grew up working with crocodiles and reptiles there, and the family later developed the site into Australia Zoo. That history explains why crocodiles and wildlife conservation remain central to the visitor experience, rather than simply one exhibit among many. The Crocoseum presentation shows the public-facing side of that focus, while the Wildlife Hospital gives another view of animal care and rehabilitation. Set aside enough time to connect those parts of the story with the habitat areas across the grounds. The original emphasis on reptiles remains a useful thread as the route moves through today's much wider collection. It makes the crocodile programme more than an isolated show.
Useful to know
- Check the day's talk and Crocoseum schedule before walking to distant habitats.
- Allow roughly four to seven hours for the grounds, depending on shows and encounters.
- Arrange popular animal encounters ahead; use the internal shuttle if the walking distance is a concern.
