Whitehaven Beach

Whitehaven is a long silica-sand beach on Whitsunday Island, reached by water rather than road; choose a trip with enough landing time to enjoy more than the view from a boat.

Why go

The exceptionally pale sand and undeveloped island setting make this a focused beach visit. A boat, canoe or kayak is needed to arrive, and a walk toward the Solway circuit lookout adds a different view if your transfer leaves sufficient time.

What to look for

  • Notice the bright, fine silica sand along the beach.
  • Look back over the coast from the Solway circuit lookout.
  • Compare the forested island edge with the open beach.

Useful to know

  • Book a transfer or tour that actually lands at Whitehaven, rather than one that only passes offshore.
  • Allow time for the lookout walk if it is part of your plan, and check current park alerts.
  • Protect cameras and phones from fine sand; the day-use area has no wheelchair-accessible facilities.
