Why go
The 17th-floor deck offers a different reading of Riga’s layout from ground level: the market, railway approaches, Old Town and Daugava come into spatial relation. The tower’s monumental style also makes the approach part of the visit. It is particularly revealing after walking the compact Old Town streets.
What to look for
- The tower combines Soviet monumental forms with Latvian decorative motifs.
- Its observation deck sits on the 17th floor.
- The building rises near the Central Market and railway district.
The full story
The Latvian Academy of Sciences building was constructed in the 1950s and early 1960s, when Riga was under Soviet rule. Its tall, stepped outline belongs to the monumental architecture of that period, yet Latvian folk motifs also appear in its decoration. Look closely at that combination before heading upward: the tower is more revealing than a simple skyline silhouette. The public observation deck is on the seventeenth floor and places the Central Market, the railway approaches, Old Town and the Daugava in one view. That height helps explain the city’s shape: the medieval center is compact, while major transport and market spaces sit just beyond it. The deck requires a short stair climb and access can change with weather, so check with the operator before making it the focus of an outing.
Useful to know
- Check current deck access before going; weather can affect visits.
- Allow for a short stair climb to reach the viewing area.
- Combine the viewpoint with the nearby Central Market if the deck is open.
