Aterro do Flamengo

This sweeping Guanabara Bay park combines Burle Marx landscapes, active recreation and major cultural landmarks along the route between central Rio and Flamengo.

Aterro do Flamengo

Why go

Aterro do Flamengo lets you exchange tight streets and exposed beaches for an open bayfront pause without leaving the urban route. Its position between Centro and the South Zone makes the park useful when a museum visit needs outdoor time before or after, rather than another cross-city transfer.

What to look for

  • Roberto Burle Marx designed the park’s modernist gardens and civic landscapes.
  • The Museu de Arte Moderna and Monument to the Dead of World War II stand within the park.
  • Marina da Glória anchors the park’s side closest to central Rio.

The full story

Aterro do Flamengo, formally Parque Brigadeiro Eduardo Gomes, was conceived by architect Lota de Macedo Soares and completed in 1965. The project turned reclaimed bayfront land into a modern civic landscape between central Rio and the southern neighborhoods. Roberto Burle Marx designed its gardens, using planting and curving forms to organize a very large open space rather than treating it as a single formal garden. Cultural and commemorative buildings became part of that landscape. The Museu de Arte Moderna faces the bay, the Monument to the Dead of World War II adds a severe modernist memorial, and Marina da Glória connects the park with sailing. Sports also became central to its identity through paths, recreation facilities and its use in road races and marathons. The result is best read as planned urban infrastructure: garden, waterfront, cultural campus and movement corridor are woven together at a scale that reflects Guanabara Bay itself.

Useful to know

  • Pick one or two cultural anchors before walking; the waterfront park covers a large area.
  • Bring sun protection for exposed bayfront paths and reserve cooler hours for a longer walk or cycle.
  • Check each museum separately, because access to the public landscape does not establish venue hours.
