Candelária Church

Candelária layers a Baroque-influenced façade, a monumental stone dome and a richly finished Neo-Renaissance interior at a prominent point in Rio's historic centre.

Candelária Church

Why go

The church makes Rio's long nineteenth-century transformation visible within one building. Its exterior preserves an earlier colonial composition, while coloured marble, ceiling paintings, bronze pulpits and stained glass fill the remodelled interior. The contrast rewards more than a quick look at the façade from Praça Pio X.

What to look for

  • Compare the pale façade with its dark granite columns, openings and twin towers.
  • Inside, trace João Zeferino da Costa's painted panels along the nave and into the dome.
  • Look for the bronze entrance doors and paired Art Nouveau pulpits.

The full story

Construction of the present Candelária began in 1775 on the site of a much smaller chapel. The unfinished church opened in 1811 while the Portuguese court was in Rio, but work and redesign continued through the nineteenth century. That extended building history explains its mixed character. The main façade retains Baroque rhythms with Neoclassical restraint, while the interior was expanded to three aisles and later remade in a sumptuous Neo-Renaissance style. The great dome, completed in 1877, used white Lioz limestone carved in Lisbon and shipped to Brazil. After 1878, Italian marble, sculptural reliefs and large painted cycles transformed the interior. Brazilian painter João Zeferino da Costa covered the nave ceiling with episodes from the church's history and worked on the dome decoration. Later bronze doors and Art Nouveau pulpits added still another layer, turning Candelária into a compact record of Rio's changing architectural tastes.
