Paraty

Paraty joins a preserved colonial center of cobbled streets and churches with a bay of islands, nearby forest and waterfalls.

Paraty

Why go

The town makes it unusually easy to pair cultural history with coastal nature. Walk the old center to understand Paraty's role on the Caminho do Ouro, then choose a bay trip, beach or waterfall as a distinct second experience. Neither half feels incidental to the destination.

What to look for

  • Rough cobbled lanes, old houses and churches define the pedestrian historic center.
  • Forte Defensor Perpétuo recalls the need to protect gold shipments from privateers.
  • The surrounding bay opens toward islands, beaches and emerald-green water.

The full story

Paraty grew in the 18th century as a port on the Caminho Real, the route used to move gold from Minas Gerais toward Lisbon. It offered an alternative when shipments through Rio de Janeiro attracted pirates and privateers. Travelers between Rio and São Paulo also stopped here until a new inland road diverted traffic in the late 19th century. The resulting isolation stalled development and helped preserve the old center instead of replacing it with a newer street plan. When Paraty was rediscovered as a visitor destination in the 1970s, its colonial fabric remained unusually coherent. The uneven lanes, churches and Forte Defensor Perpétuo therefore form more than a picturesque backdrop: together they reveal a port shaped by precious cargo, defensive concerns and changing transport routes. The forest, waterfalls and islands show why the settlement belonged to a wider coastal landscape.

Useful to know

  • Wear stable shoes for the uneven stones and explore the car-free historic center on foot.
  • Plan a boat trip, waterfall or Trindade excursion as a separate block from the old-town walk.
  • Check individual church, museum, boat and trail arrangements before the day of your visit.
