Why go
The rock outcrop changes the coast from a continuous strip of sand into a natural lookout and concentrated surf break. It is especially rewarding when you want to understand how Ipanema and Copacabana meet, rather than spending hours settled on one beach.
What to look for
- The headland opens views along both Ipanema and Copacabana beaches.
- The rock outcrop creates a compact left-breaking surf zone close to the city.
- Near midsummer, the coastal angle can place the setting sun over the sea.
Useful to know
- Wear shoes with grip if you plan to use the rock walkways, and leave exposed ledges in rough weather.
- Treat the surf break cautiously: the take-off area is tight and a strong current can run beside the promontory.
- Link Arpoador with a walk along Ipanema rather than planning it as a long standalone beach stay.
