Why go
Tijuca changes the scale of a Rio visit: within the city, dense forest rises toward Pico da Tijuca and surrounds landmarks such as Cascatinha Taunay and Vista Chinesa. The park suits visitors who want active terrain and ecological context, not just a framed panorama from a single lookout.
What to look for
- Cascatinha Taunay brings a tall forest waterfall close to the park road.
- Trails climb toward Pico da Tijuca through mountainous Atlantic Forest.
- Mayrink Chapel, Vista Chinesa and Mesa do Imperador add designed landmarks among the trees.
The full story
Tijuca's forest is both ecological landscape and a major nineteenth-century restoration project. Coffee cultivation had stripped extensive slopes, worsening concern about the springs that supplied Rio. From the 1860s, workers under Major Manuel Gomes Archer replanted large areas to protect the city's water sources. The result was not a return to untouched wilderness, but a recovering Atlantic Forest threaded with roads, fountains, chapels and viewpoints created across different periods. In 1961 the area became part of a national park. That history changes how the vegetation reads today. Dense canopy can look timeless, yet it records deliberate public intervention on damaged land. Cascatinha Taunay, the Portinari murals in Mayrink Chapel, the Chinese-style pavilion at Vista Chinesa and the trails toward Pico da Tijuca show the range of experiences contained within the park. They also explain why planning by sector matters: Tijuca is a mountain landscape, not a single entrance-and-loop attraction.
