Getting around the Riviera Maya

Coastal towns and attractions are spread out, so match the transport to the distance. Intercity buses connect major towns, while local transport is more useful within each town or resort area.

Getting around the Riviera Maya

Why go

A trip from Cancún toward Playa del Carmen or Tulum needs a different plan from a short ride within Cancún's hotel zone. Use the intercity bus network for major town-to-town journeys, then work out the final leg to a beach, ruin or park. This avoids treating every coastal stop as if it were on one urban bus route.

Useful to know

  • For a town-to-town journey, check the current intercity route and boarding point before setting out.
  • Plan the final leg separately when the attraction is away from the town bus station.
  • Agree on the fare before taking a taxi, especially for a longer ride or an airport transfer.
