Why go
The catacombs make more sense as one layer within a larger sacred landscape. Agnes’s burial drew an early memorial, later basilicas and an expanded underground cemetery; nearby, Constantine’s family built the basilica ruins and Santa Costanza mausoleum that still frame the site’s development.
What to look for
- Follow the relationship between Agnes’s grave and the seventh-century basilica built partly into the hillside.
- Notice how the galleries expanded from an earlier family hypogeum into several cemetery regions.
- Include Santa Costanza to compare subterranean burial with an above-ground imperial mausoleum.
Useful to know
- Reserve at least 90 minutes for the catacombs, basilica and Santa Costanza together.
- Underground access involves stairs, narrow galleries and cooler temperatures.
- Verify current visiting arrangements before traveling to Via Nomentana.
