Why go
EUR provides the clearest urban-scale view of how twentieth-century Rome reworked classical forms for a modern capital. The cancelled 1942 world’s fair left an unfinished core that was later adapted into a business district and completed around the 1960 Olympics.
What to look for
- The Palazzo della Civiltà Italiana repeats arches across a stark cubic form, earning the nickname “Square Colosseum.”
- Wide axial roads and pale stone façades reveal the original exhibition plan more clearly than any single building.
- Postwar additions and landscaped areas show how Rome converted an ideological showcase into a functioning district.
Useful to know
- EUR is spread out; choose a compact architectural route rather than attempting the whole district on foot.
- The large avenues and open plazas offer little shade, so avoid the hottest part of the day.
