MACRO

Rome’s municipal contemporary-art museum occupies a converted Peroni brewery on Via Nizza, pairing industrial fabric with spaces designed for postwar and current art.

MACRO

Why go

MACRO shifts attention from Rome’s archaeological and Baroque identity to artistic production since the 1960s. The collection connects Forma 1, Arte Povera and the Scuola di Piazza del Popolo with later Italian work, while the brewery conversion gives the museum a deliberately non-palatial setting.

What to look for

  • Notice how Odile Decq’s interventions use circulation, color and open volume within the former brewery complex.
  • Look for links among Forma 1 abstraction, Arte Povera materials and the Roman artists of Piazza del Popolo.
  • Treat temporary exhibitions as part of the museum’s identity rather than expecting a fixed masterpiece route.

Useful to know

  • Allow 60–90 minutes, with timing adjusted to the current exhibition program.
  • Do not confuse the Via Nizza museum with the former Testaccio annex described in older material.
  • Check the current museum program and access details before going.
