Museo della Via Ostiense

Inside Porta San Paolo, this small museum explains the ancient road to Ostia, Rome’s southern gate and the landscape of trade and burial beyond the walls.

Museo della Via Ostiense

Why go

The setting supplies much of the value: the displays occupy a fortified gate in the Aurelian Walls where Via Ostiensis left Rome for its port. Models and archaeological material connect the road with the river emporium, Ostia and nearby monuments such as the Pyramid of Cestius.

What to look for

  • Examine the gate’s paired cylindrical towers and the later single-opening defense built in front of it.
  • Use models and maps to trace Via Ostiensis from Rome toward the port at Ostia.
  • Look from the gate toward the Pyramid of Cestius and surviving wall circuit.

Useful to know

  • Allow 45–60 minutes and combine the museum with the pyramid, Protestant Cemetery or Testaccio.
  • The historic gate includes stairs and confined architectural spaces.
  • Confirm current access before making a dedicated trip.
