National Roman Museum

Rome’s national archaeological museum distributes ancient sculpture, frescoes, mosaics, inscriptions and urban history across several buildings rather than one central collection.

National Roman Museum

Why go

The multisite structure lets each branch answer a different question. Palazzo Massimo concentrates major sculpture, frescoes and mosaics; the Baths of Diocletian connect inscriptions and early Rome with monumental bath architecture; Palazzo Altemps presents aristocratic collecting; Crypta Balbi traces one city block through centuries of change.

What to look for

  • Use Palazzo Massimo for the Discobolus, Boxer at Rest and painted rooms from Roman houses.
  • Choose the Baths of Diocletian for epigraphy, monumental space and Michelangelo’s charterhouse setting.
  • Visit Crypta Balbi when urban transformation matters more than a sequence of masterpieces.

Useful to know

  • Select one or two branches according to subject and location; all four do not form a realistic brief visit.
  • Allow at least two hours for Palazzo Massimo or the Baths of Diocletian.
  • Confirm current branch access individually because the museum has no single visitor entrance.
