Ostia Antica Archaeological Park

Ancient Rome’s port survives as an unusually legible city of streets, apartment blocks, baths, temples, warehouses and richly patterned mosaics.

Ostia Antica Archaeological Park

Why go

Ostia Antica reveals ordinary Roman urban life on a scale that isolated monuments cannot. Walking its street grid shows how commerce, worship, entertainment and housing fitted together in the city that handled much of Rome’s maritime trade, with enough surviving fabric to follow those relationships on foot.

What to look for

  • Use the Decumanus Maximus as the main spine, then step into side streets to understand the city block by block.
  • Inspect the black-and-white mosaics in bath buildings and commercial spaces; many identify trades, deities or maritime.
  • The theatre, forum and Capitolium clarify the relationship between public entertainment, civic business and religion.

Useful to know

  • Allow at least half a day; the site is extensive and much of the route crosses uneven ancient paving.
  • Check the official park timetable before leaving Rome, and carry water and sun protection because shade is intermittent.
