Ponte Sant’Angelo

Hadrian’s bridge crosses the Tiber on the direct approach to his mausoleum, now Castel Sant’Angelo, beneath a Baroque procession of angels.

Ponte Sant’Angelo

Why go

The bridge preserves the strongest visual connection between an imperial tomb and central Rome. Three ancient arches survive within the later structure, while Bernini’s sculptural program recast the route as a Christian pilgrimage approach toward St Peter’s and the castle named for an angelic vision.

What to look for

  • Frame Castel Sant’Angelo between the angel statues as you walk from the historic center.
  • Examine the angels’ instruments of the Passion, each carrying a different object from Christ’s suffering.
  • Look downriver and upstream to place the bridge within the Tiber embankments and Borgo approach.

Useful to know

  • Allow 15–20 minutes for the crossing and views, apart from any castle visit.
  • Combine it with Castel Sant’Angelo, then continue through Borgo toward St Peter’s Square.
  • Verify current pedestrian conditions if the crossing is essential to a tightly timed route.
