Spanish Steps

A sweeping eighteenth-century stair links Piazza di Spagna and the Barcaccia fountain with Trinità dei Monti on the Pincian slope above.

Spanish Steps

Why go

The appeal is the complete urban composition rather than the 135 steps alone. Curving flights widen into terraces, repeatedly changing the view between the boat-shaped fountain below and the twin-towered church above. The design turns a steep connection into a sequence of outdoor rooms.

What to look for

  • Begin beside the Barcaccia and watch the stair divide, reunite and open toward the upper terrace.
  • Notice the balanced papal eagle and French fleur-de-lys within the sculptural details.
  • Look back over Piazza di Spagna before reaching Trinità dei Monti.

Useful to know

  • Allow 20–30 minutes to climb slowly and study both directions.
  • Use the stair as a link to the Pincian Hill or Villa Medici rather than immediately descending the same way.
  • The polished stone and dense foot traffic require care, especially in wet weather.
