Why go
This is one of the clearest places to experience Roman engineering at human scale. Ramps, vaulted halls and the curving Via Biberatica reveal how builders stabilized a cut hillside while creating connected rooms on several levels. The museum then restores architectural fragments to the imperial fora they once decorated.
What to look for
- Walk the Via Biberatica, the preserved internal street lined with compact vaulted rooms.
- Study the great hall’s concrete vault and openings, which bring light and air into the interior.
- Use the upper outlook to connect the complex with Trajan’s Forum, column and the Vittoriano beyond.
Useful to know
- Allow 60–90 minutes for the building and museum displays.
- The route mixes indoor galleries, stairs, ramps and outdoor terraces; footwear matters more than distance.
- Pair it with Trajan’s Column or the Vittoriano rather than adding the entire Roman Forum immediately afterward.
