Why go
The old centre brings several strands of Dutch history into a small area: canal streets, the churches linked to the royal family, and the ceramic tradition shaped by seventeenth-century Chinese porcelain. It works especially well as a focused contrast to Rotterdam's modern cityscape.
What to look for
- Nieuwe Kerk holds the royal burial vault of the House of Orange-Nassau.
- Oostpoort, built around 1400, is Delft's only surviving medieval city gate.
- Delftware developed from attempts to emulate imported seventeenth-century Chinese porcelain.
Useful to know
- Use the canal centre as the link between Oude Kerk, Nieuwe Kerk and Oostpoort.
- Combine the two churches first, then continue east to Oostpoort for a clear architectural sequence.
