Why go
Nieuwe Instituut gives Rotterdam’s experimental buildings an institutional context. It was formed in 2013 by merging the Netherlands Architecture Institute, Premsela and Virtueel Platform, broadening the programme beyond architecture alone. Jo Coenen’s 1993 Museumpark building remains part of the encounter, so exhibitions and the setting can be read together.
What to look for
- Jo Coenen’s 1993 building beside Museumpark
- Exhibitions connecting architecture with design and digital culture
- The continuing architectural collection inherited from the former institute
Useful to know
- Look for Nieuwe Instituut on signs and programmes; the Netherlands Architecture Institute name is obsolete.
- Check the current exhibition programme before choosing how long to spend inside.
- Combine the visit with Kunsthal or Het Natuurhistorisch in the same Museumpark area.
