Peace Palace
The Peace Palace is The Hague's landmark of international law, housing courts, an academy and a specialist library in one symbolic complex.
Why go
The building connects The Hague's diplomatic identity to institutions that still shape international law. Its architecture also carries a material record of international support through gifts contributed by nations represented at the Second Hague Conference. The combination makes an abstract legal role visible through a specific place.
What to look for
The International Court of Justice is the principal judicial organ of the United Nations.
The Permanent Court of Arbitration has occupied the palace since it opened in 1913.
International gifts include Italian marble, Belgian doors and Japanese wall carpets.
Useful to know
Check which parts are accessible before travelling; the Visitors Centre follows a schedule.
Allow time to inspect the exterior even when court spaces are not open to visitors.
