Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood
Visit the memorial church for its elaborate decoration and close connection to the assassination of Alexander II. Its purpose adds meaning to the striking canal-side silhouette.
The church stands on the site where Alexander II was fatally attacked in 1881. Built between 1883 and 1907, it turns a specific event into a large architectural memorial. The setting beside the canal makes the exterior immediately recognizable, while the interior gives the commemorative project a different scale and intensity.
