Peter and Paul Fortress
Explore the city's original citadel for fortifications and the history of a site that also served as a prison. Choose individual museum interiors separately within the larger visit.
Founded by Peter the Great in 1703, the fortress helps explain Saint Petersburg's beginnings before its later palaces and formal squares. Its history also includes detention and imprisonment, making the site more than a military structure. Walking the grounds gives context to the museum spaces rather than reducing the visit to a single building.
