The full story
Cycling conditions change sharply across San Diego. Mission Bay offers long, relatively level paths, while coastal cliffs, canyon crossings and inland mesas add climbs and traffic exposure. Choose a route for its infrastructure and terrain rather than drawing a straight line between attractions. The waterfront and bay are more forgiving for casual riders; links through busy commercial streets require greater confidence. Check current city bike maps and temporary path notices before leaving. Helmets, lights, water and sun protection matter even on short trips. Shared paths can be crowded with walkers, and beach promenades demand slower speeds. If a route includes Torrey Pines, Point Loma or steep La Jolla streets, compare the climb with your fitness before committing. Build in a turnaround point, since wind, heat or an unexpected climb can make the return substantially harder than the outward ride.
